The well-known Shrine of the Divine Mercy is
located at El Salvador, Misamis Oriental overlooking the Macajalar Bay. It is a
pilgrimage site for various religious group throughout the year and a favored
place for atonement, spiritual assessment and reflection. The 9 hectares land
covered in greenery is where the 15.24 meters (50 feet) statue of Divine Mercy (the
tallest in the Philippines and throughout Asia) is located in which you can
climb the steps towards the heart of the statue the “chamber of adoration” as
what the devotees called it.
The Shrine is open and free for all however
you need to dress modestly or if the visitors were not aware of the proper dress
code, they offer a "sarong" for rent at
the cost of P20. The devotees of the Divine Mercy doesn’t ask any amount but
accepts a donation for upcoming projects and developments of the area.
Before you are allowed to walk at
the heart of the Divine Mercy, they offer a little summary on when it was all started.
Moreover they explain the visions and miracles that happens and will be advice
to leave all personal belongings to their baggage area, even the cellphones are
not allowed upstairs for the reason that it was intended for prayers and
devotions not for personal pleasures.
Before ascending the stairs, you
will be given a little yellow paper scribbled with a prayer to recite while taking
the steps (I really feel something while doing this honestly) then at the heart
of the Divine Mercy, you can pray for your personal intentions.
At the back of the statue on its base is the
location of the Church and the Chapel of the Holy Shroud. The celebration of
the Feast of the Divine Mercy transpires on every Sunday after Easter.
