Having a day or night job for 5 to 6 days a week 8 to 12
hours a day doing repetitive task is exhausting and unexciting, you feel like
you are just doing your job for the sake of having a meal three times a day for
your family (trust me I'm one of those) yet you still feel like your life is in
imbalance.
Why not spread your wings (maybe once in a year) travel in
different places, see the world and try to challenge yourself not just mentally
but also physically.
One of enjoyable feeling for me is conquering a mountain.
Mountain climbing is one of the things I love most for it
gives me a satisfaction, a fulfillment, a total bliss when you surpass a tough
trail. All the sweat, the tired achy muscles, the hungry stomach will be naught
when you gloriously stand at the top of the mountain and see the beauty of
nature that surrounds you. The challenges that you will encountered throughout
the trails, the weather that you will endure yet you can say that you made it!
Something that you will be proud of, something that others failed to do but you
believe in yourself and that’s why you beat the odds and accomplished your
goal.
I had made a list as a guide for beginners on what to bring
if you want to experience the wild, the life with no electricity and no WIFI.
1. Shoes - Choose a shoes that is strong enough to withhold
the hours of walking, climbing steep rocks even in a muddy and rainy weather. I
also preferred a shoe size that has an inch bigger than my foot size so that
your foot has enough space for comfort.
2. Backpack – Pack light bring only the necessary items for
the reason that the weight of your backpack will become heavier the higher the
altitude. Bag with rain cover is highly required.
3. Tent – you can share your tent with someone to lessen the
cold weather conditions at night and to share body heat. Preferably double ply
tent in case of heavy downpour.
4. Shirt - dry fit or spandex so that it could be easily dried.
Just bring enough clothes like a set of 2 to 3 clothes for a 2-3 days hike and
one set for a day hike. Usually I use the set of clothes that i slept into for the
next day hike.
5. Shorts/Leggings – Spacious enough and comfortable to
wear, if possible do not wear "maong" shorts because of its fabric, it might
cause burns due to excessive collisions between your thighs.
6. Underwear - if you do not want to sleep with a sweaty/dirty
undies, you shouldn’t forget this one.
7. Raincoat/Poncho/Waterproof Jacket – To keep you dry on heavy
rains especially while still on trail

8. Jacket/Fleece – It will be a lot colder during nighttime or
early in the morning thus be ready.
9. Socks - wear a more thick socks that will provide comfort
while walking for hours.
10. Earth pad/hiking Mat - support your body under the cold
and damp ground while sleeping
11. Bush hat/Cap - for sun protection
12. Trail Food - walking for hours will consume most of your
energy thus you need to replenish while walking, you can bring chocolate bars,
granola bars, or any snacks, I prefer jelly ace not just because of its jelly
substance but because of its sugary and watery taste.
13. Water - some mountains has a limited amount of water
source therefore you need to bring your own water especially if you have feeble
stomach. The water that you will bring will depends on how many liters of water
you will consume while hiking. For me 1 liter a day is sufficient so if i have
a 3 days hike, i will bring a 3 - 4 liters of water. If there will be a fresh
and clean water source in the mountain, you can adjust the liters of water that
you will bring.
14. Cook set and Burner – For cooking
15. Foods – For breakfast lunch and dinner
16. Spoon/Fork and Mug – For eating
17. Trek Pants/Jogging Pants - temperature at night in the
mountain will gradually decrease so you need to stay warm.
18. Sleeping Bag – Keeps you warm and comfortable at night.
19. Headlamp/ Flashlight – Essential especially at night or
during night trek
20. First Aid Kit – You will never know what you will
encounter at the forest so you need to be prepared
21. Cellphone/Camera – To capture each treasured moments
Optional:
Trekking pole
Gloves
Slipper/sandals
Warmer/arm sleeves
Shades/sunglasses
Sun Screen Lotion/Sun block
Insect repellant
Remember to read and familiarize first the mountain that you
will be hiking, there are available blogs, website or even YouTube channels
that will guide and gives a head-up on what will be waiting for you at the mountain
you wish to climb. It is wise to be knowledgeable.
